VP Note: Good News (Mostly)
We’re pleased to report the good news that the Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs (AAHRPP) has granted MSU’s human research protection programs full accreditation. This was the final step on a long journey that involved many faculty and administrators. I thank you all for your hard work, especially Linda Triemer and Peter Vasilenko and the staff of our Office of Regulatory Affairs. Now we have to retain our status. That means we can’t let down our guard; we must continue to be vigilant on behalf of the people who agree to participate in our research. We’re also pleased with the very good response to the request for proposals in the 21st Century Jobs Fund competition (see news brief). This excellent showing should help MSU win a number of grants and ultimately help move the state economy forward.Another strong push for the state economy will come from the $15 million, three-year grant for Workforce Innovation in Regional Economic Development (WIRED), one of 13 awarded in February by the Department of Labor. MSU is the lead agency, and Paul Hunt (who led the successful proposal-writing process) is directing the consortium in the effort to advance a biobased economy that will draw heavily on research conducted at MSU.
The bad news is the rise in cases of plagiarism being reported to MSU’s intellectual integrity officer. This appears to be a national, perhaps international, trend reflecting, to some extent, increased attention to the issue and a broader definition. The current issue of the Research Integrity Newsletter, produced by the Graduate School, provides extensive information on identifying and preventing plagiarism. I encourage everyone involved in the research enterprise to read it carefully. It’s available in hard copy and on line from both the OVPRGS and the Graduate School Web sites.
