Kurt Williams, associate professor in the Department of Pathobiology and Diagnostic Investigation in MSU's College of Veterinary Medicine, identified a new respiratory disease of horses named equine multinodular pulmonary fibrosis, so named because nodules of scar tissue form in the lungs. It is associated with a gammaherpesvirus, equine herpesvirus-5, not previously known to cause disease in horses. The serious and progressive disease often does not respond well to therapy; identifying the viral association may lead to treatment and prevention strategies.
